-

KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Mohamad Nordin Ibrahim has been announced as the new director-general of the Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim), effective next Thursday.

Nordin, 58, will replace Tan Sri Othman Mustapha, who is due for mandatory retirement on May 16.

The Public Service Department (PSD) had consented to Nordin’s appointment following the end of Othman’s seven-year contract with Jakim.

In a statement, Othman said Nordin had received his letter of appointment on May 7.

“With his credibility, knowledge and experience in managing Islamic matters, coupled with his high integrity, I am confident he can continue Jakim’s vision and mission to ensure it delivers the best service to the people.

“Congratulations,” Othman said.

Nordin previously held the post of Jakim deputy director-general for policies.

“I would like to express my gratitude to the Malaysian government that had trusted me to serve as Jakim director-general for seven years.

“I pray that the government, specifically PSD, will continue to excel in serving religion, race and country,” Othman said.

Nordin received his early education at the Klang Islamic college in Selangor.

He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Islamic Studies (Usuluddin) and a Master Degree in Islamic Civilisation from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia.

He has served in the public service for 34 years, with his first appointment as an Islamic matters officer in January 1984.
