TWO men were shot dead and another wounded in a shootout with police moments after they and three others robbed a goldsmith store in the Atria Shopping Gallery in Damansara Jaya yesterday.

Police arrested the other three robbers in the 5pm incident.

Selangor Criminal Investigation Department chief Senior Assistant Commissioner Fadzil Ahmat said the robbers, who wore full-face motorcycle helmets, were armed with hammers and pistols.

He said one robber entered the store and aimed his pistol at employees and a security guard.

“The others then rushed in and used hammers to break the display cases. They scooped jewellery into bags before fleeing.”

Police, however, were alerted to what was happening, said Fadzil. A team of policemen from the Serious Crimes Division was despatched.

“As they arrived, they saw the robbers escaping on three motorcycles. My men gave chase and took on fire from them.”

He said police were forced to open fire, killing two of the robbers on the spot.

“Initial investigations led us to believe that this gang had been robbing jewellery stores in Selangor and Negri Sembilan, as well as Kuala Lumpur. Police recovered the jewellery they had stolen and seized two pistols and a shotgun.”

Fadzil said police, however, believed there might be other members of the gang and were now looking for them.
