THERE is no proof to support Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s claim that the RM2.6 billion deposited into his personal account in 2014 was a donation from a Saudi Arabian prince, said the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).

MACC Chief Commissioner Datuk Seri Mohd Shukri Abdull said this was based on the findings of investigators sent to Saudi Arabia to meet the prince in 2015.

“In any investigation, our procedure is to find a witness. Based on a letter that said the money was a donation from a Saudi prince, our officers went there,” he said at the MACC headquarters here yesterday.

Shukri said while the prince in question admitted to donating the money, he could not provide relevant documents to support his claim.

“There must be documentation and proof of funds transfer as it is common to keep such documents. But, this prince failed to provide proof.”

In August 2015, MACC, in a statement, said the RM2.6 billion deposited into former prime minister Najib’s personal account was confirmed to be a donation.

The statement said MACC had received an explanation from the donor and found the details of the donor via documents obtained from the bank.

The commission found that four letters were handed to the bank when a large amount of money was transferred into Najib’s account.

“In the document, it is explained that the RM2.6 billion was a donation,” read the statement dated Aug 5, 2015.

In 2016, Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir clarified that the donation was genuine with “nothing expected in return”.

Shukri said MACC’s findings on the 1MDB issue were “almost similar” to that of the United States’ Department of Justice (DoJ).

He said the commission was trying its best to obtain Mutual Legal Assistance (MLA) in seeking help from countries, such as Switzerland, in the 1MDB probe.

He said MACC had gathered only domestic evidence and documents.

“We have yet to record any statements from foreign witnesses. Hence, we need to get consent from the attorney-general to get MLA to seek international assistance.

“We will do it as soon as possible. We are working with the US and Switzerland authorities. We are facing difficulties in dealing with Middle Eastern countries, such as Qatar and Saudi Arabia, but we will do our best.”
