Pharmacy student wins Social Impact Policy Award
University College of Medical Sciences (CUCMS) Pharmacy students bagged awards at the National Pharmacy Research Competition (NPRC) recently.
Final-year Bachelor of Pharmacy student Nur Asyiqin Masenwat was named the winner of the Social Impact Policy Award and the first runner-up for the Education in Pharmacy and Health Sciences category.
Deenna Noris Liyana Kamaruddin, also a final-year pharmacy student, was first runner-up in the Industrial Pharmacy category.
Organised by the Malaysian Pharmacy Students’ Association (MyPSA), the aim of the contest is to enhance the quality of students’ research projects and to provide recognition to innovative research. Seven universities participated in the competition themed Transforming Creativity into a Scientific Research Knowledge.
“I hope the findings of my research on running-related musculoskeletal injuries will be useful for other studies as well,” said Nur Asyiqin. Her research focused on the rising number of beginners in marathon events which then increases the number of the running-related musculoskeletal injuries that develop if no preventive action is taken.
“Research is important for students not only for the findings but also the experience that help them to be more independent. This experience will boost employability after graduation,” added Deenna Noris Liyana.
MyPSA adviser Datin Mariani Ahmad Nizaruddin said: “Research is important as students exercise problem-solving and critical analysis skills when investigating problems.”
Shairyzah Ahmad Hisham, deputy dean of student affairs, Faculty of Pharmacy CUCMS, said: “Pharmaceutical research is an important aspect of health care as continuous advancement in disease management helps improve disease outcomes and quality of life of the community.”
