Boy escapes unhurt after ceiling collapses at flat unit

-

BUKIT BERUNTUNG: “Mum... the ceiling has fallen.”

Aminah Alias was shocked to hear her son, Muhammad Haziq Shahrudin, 10, shouting that on Wednesday afternoon.

The boy had narrowly escaped being crushed by concrete as the ceiling of their fifth floor apartment unit in Taman Bunga Raya collapsed.

In the 1.35pm incident, Haziq was getting ready for his religious studies class while Aminah was praying. Haziq said there was a storm, adding that the structure might have collapsed after the apartment block was hit by lightning.

“I was standing near the sofa in the living room when the structure collapsed. I immediately shouted for my mother,” he said during a visit by Batang Kali assemblyman Harumaini Omar to the unit. Aminah had been praying at the living room as well, but had not realised that the ceiling had collapsed.

Aminah said when she realised what had happened, she hugged Haziq tightly and pulled him to the side.

“At the time, only the two of us were at home. My husband was at work in Rawang and two other children were at school. I didn’t know what to do then as I was in shock,” she said, adding that she finally came to her senses and called her husband.

Harumaini said the Anggerik Apartments joint management body (JMB) would help place the family temporarily at its multipurpose hall.
