Ode to modern-day feminism

FALL IN LINE Christina Aguilera ft. Demi Lovato

JUST like wine, they get better with age and that’s exactly the kind of music-maker Christina Aguilera is all about. Sure, she’s had her prime time but her comeback is clearly screaming “move aside, my primetime isn’t over”.

True enough, her latest track, which she joined forces with Demi Lovato, is an incredibly powerful ode to modern-day feminism.

When the rumours of the collaboration became headlines, I was thinking: “if this is really true, why didn’t it happen sooner?!”

Both their vocals are undeniably strong and, together, it’s out of this world. I have been waiting for this track to drop and now that it’s finally here, it is definitely a must-have on your playlist.

Not only does it send an important message, the song itself is also really well done. The chorus, the punches, the melody — everything hits the right spot — and with two great singers, it is the best you can get.

Some say she rode on the #MeToo movement but, according to an interview of Aguilera with a publication, she said: “You hear Fall In Line and maybe think it was inspired by this time and it’s not. It was created years ago. It’s something I’ve always felt very strongly.”

She saw those questions coming and she had it all ready.

Fall In Line is an empowering anthem, where it tells a a story of many who are struggling with the society’s standards and norms. It calls out the societal restrictions and it tells you to speak your mind no matter what people say. It’s surely my kind of song.

The vocal chemistry between Aguilera and Lovato is top-notch and it can’t get any better than this.

Her album, Liberation, drops on June 15 and the duo will be debuting the song at the upcoming Billboard Music Awards 2018.

Beyonce is right. Who run the world? Girls!

VOICENOTES Charlie Puth

HE rose to fame after penning the Paul Walker tribute See You Again, which has won him several awards.

Since then, Charlie Puth has been breaking into the scene with multi collaborations with big names like Selena Gomez and Meghan Trainor which then led to his debut album, Nine Track Mind.

Fast forward to today and Puth has just released his sophomore album which, according to some, will make him a household name. We’ll get to that in a little bit.

Months before the album drop, his singles Attention and How Long were hitting the charts and even garnered a spot on the Top 40 radio all over the world.

The former also hit No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart last August. His songs have always been good but are they good enough to make him a household name? I’m not too sure yet.

However, I always believe that credit should be given when it’s due. Puth has certainly proven himself that he’s more than just a good voice.

Voicenotes exudes confidence, maturity and a sense of style which he once lacked of but I think we can slowly see what Puth has to offer.

In If You Leave Me Now featuring Boyz II Men, his vocal really shine bright. In fact, it’s one of my favourite tracks. The a capella in the background fuses so perfectly and their voices just melt into this wonderful harmony. The song hits you right at the heart and you can clearly hear the emotions in it.

There are a couple of noteworthy tracks and Done For Me featuring Kehlani is definitely one of them. It’s catchy without overdoing it. Kehlani’s vocals really complemented the song. Change featuring James Taylor is another favourite. Featuring mellow vocals and guitar strums, you can never go wrong with those.

While Taylor Swift sings about her relationships and love life, Puth writes about his life and turn them into your playlist.

“This album is just about my life and how it relates to other people”, he revealed in a recent interview. Well, we certainly know him a lot more than we did before!

All in all, Voicenotes is an effortless record with a great mix of sounds. If Puth needs more time to figure out his life. I’m all ears.

BACK TO YOU Selena Gomez

IT’S been a year since her kidney transplant surgery and Selena Gomez has been the talk of town ever since for many reasons.

First, her rekindled relationship with Justin Bieber which ended shortly after, her battle with anxiety and depression, and now, her new track which serves to be the official soundtrack for the upcoming Season 2 of 13 Reasons Why.

Back To You is a deeply emotional track dance pop anthem. “You could break my heart in two/ But when it heals, it beats for you/ I know it’s forward, but it’s true”, she sings in the pre-chorus.

When asked about the song, she said, “It’s a very special record. I want it to be a beautiful message in a really complicated way but really fun.”

Some say the tune is about Bieber but Gomez was quick to deny the rumour. If you’re thinking The Weeknd, you are wrong too. In fact, the song was written by someone else by the name of Amy Allen and Gomez decided to give the song a go because she felt at that point of time, the song “fit her life”. She also described the song as “third part of a trilogy starting with It Ain’t Me and Wolves”.

It is no doubt that Gomez is a great singer and her choice of songs are simply unquestionable as well. Back To You sounds like another classic Gomez track.

I am excited for the next album which she is currently finishing. No news on when exactly that would be but I am not complaining about these surprise singles. Keep ‘em coming!
