2 schools to take part in China contest

-

PUTRAJAYA: SMK Putrajaya Presint 8(1) and SM Sains Kota Tinggi, Johor will represent Malaysia in the World Adolescent Robot Contest (WARC) 2018 in Guizhou, China.

The two schools took part in a nationallevel contest last year, organised by Sasbadi, with cooperation from the Education Ministry.

To be held from July 19 to 26 at Guizhou University in Guiyang, WARC will see the participation of 58 countries.

SMK Putrajaya Presint 8(1) teacher Rizawani Mustafa, who is mentor for the school team, said yesterday this was the school’s first time taking part in an international robotics competition.

“Our team will use EV3 Mindstorms from Lego, which cost RM2,900, in the competition.

“We were informed about this earlier this month and we were happy and surprised. Three students who will represent our team have undergone two-week training with assistance from Sasbadi.”

She said participants must ensure the robots that they took would complete the mission.

“From there, the jury will evaluate on the scoring as well as its agility.

“Participants will be quarantined for two hours, without the presence of their teachers, and will have to assemble the robot and programme it using a laptop.

“After all the tasks have been completed, only then will the robot proceed with the mission.”

Rizawani, who is a History teacher, said the two hours were crucial as participants must be cautious.

“Any mistake will cost them. Hence, the students are undergoing training to ensure they don’t make mistakes in the competition.”
