Car sales expected to rise

-

IPOH: Car sales are expected to go up in the next two months, as the country enjoys zero-rated Goods and Services Tax (GST) from yesterday.

A Perusahaan Otomobil Kedua Sdn Bhd (Perodua) spokesman said he predicted a surge in car sales as this would be the best time for people to buy cars.

“Since the announcement on the (zero-rated) GST, we have received a number of customers interested in the Axia and Myvi models. As of yesterday (Thursday), 223 cars have been sold.

“Usually, we sell about eight to nine cars a day. But, since the announcement, more than 11 cars have been sold,” he said at a Perodua showroom in Gugusan Manjoi here yesterday.

Many automobile companies had announced zero-rated GST prices, and the savings for car buyers was substantial.

For example, Perodua is offering GST rebates of RM2,172 for a 1.0litre Axia SE (auto) and RM3,114 for a 1.5-litre Myvi Advance.

Also, the company will reimburse the GST amount in cash to those who buy a new Perodua car, service their cars or buy parts between May 18 and 31.

A customer, Azhar Mohd Isa, 54, said it was a good time to buy a car following the zero-rated GST.

“We should grab this opportunity before the Sales and Services Tax kicks in. I came here today (yesterday) to buy a car, either a MyVi or Bezza, for my son, who just started working.

“This is a golden opportunity for people who want to own their first car or change cars.”

Another customer, Izzamudin Jusoh, said the government came out with a good initiative as GST burdened the people.

“I have worked for several years, but have yet to own a car. After the government made the announcement, I called the Perodua showroom here to get the new price list.”
