RMAF hopes operations will continue at airbase

-

SUBANG: The Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) is hopeful that the Sendayan Air Force base operations in Negri Sembilan will continue with Pakatan Harapan forming the government after winning the 14th General Election.

RMAF chief General Tan Sri Affendi Buang said the transfer process, comprising assets, equipment and personnel, had been carried out in stages, with some departments already operating at the new airbase.

“We (RMAF) need the Sendayan airbase. It is almost 90 per cent complete. We will discuss the direction of the Defence Ministry on this matter next week.”

Affendi said this at RMAF’s 60th anniversary celebration at the Subang airbase here. Some 700 officers and personnel attended the event.

He said he was waiting for the government’s decision on the matter. He believed the government would support the existence of the Sendayan airbase as a requirement for national defence.

There have been concerns that several ongoing projects at the Sendayan airbase, which have yet to be completed, will postpone the transfer process if there is no support from the government.

The 303.5ha Sendayan Air Force base will be RMAF’s headquarters for Kuala Lumpur.

The base will house 600 officers and administrative members, who will be accompanied by 1,300 family members.

The RM2.7 billion airbase has the latest facilities in line with RMAF’s requirements and challenges.

Several air force training centres will be set up there, including RMAF’s Education and Training Headquarters and the Institute for Administration and Management.
