POLICE have issued an arrest warrant against Sungai Besar Umno chief Datuk Seri Jamal Md Yunos, who is said to have absconded to an island in Indonesia.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun said the warrant was issued following Jamal’s failure to come forward and facilitate police investigations against him.

He said “ample time” had been given to Jamal to cooperate with the police.

“However, he has failed to do so and even issued a statement claiming his personal safety is at risk. Following this, police have issued an arrest warrant against him under Section 224 of the Penal Code for escaping or resisting police custody,” said Fuzi in a statement yesterday.

He said the arrest warrant was issued by the Ampang magistrate’s court in Selangor.

Fuzi advised those with information on Jamal’s whereabouts to contact the nearest police station. Jamal is wanted for six cases under investigation, as well as another three based on charges filed against him at Ampang Puteri Specialist Hospital on May 25.

Jamal disappeared from the hospital last Friday after police granted him bail.

Unverified reports in a Chinese daily said Jamal escaped to Pulau Karimun in Indonesia on May 27.

The island is 10km off the coast of southwestern Johor and can be reached by boat from Kukup in Johor.

Jamal was charged with causing public nuisance on Oct 5, 2016 when he led a protest at the Selangor State Secretariat building’s front gate, where he smashed crates of beer with a sledgehammer.

He was arrested by police recently to facilitate an investigation into photos allegedly depicting him carrying and displaying a firearm in a threatening manner.

In a voice recording sent to reporters on Sunday, Jamal said he would turn up at the Ampang Jaya district police headquarters to complete his bail process, but failed to do so.

In a video clip released later, Jamal claimed the government was planning to pressure the police to mistreat him.

In the video, Jamal asked for protection from Home Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
