KHAIRY EYEING V-P POST
Khairul Azwan to contest for Youth chief post
UMNO Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin has confirmed that he will contest the vice-president’s post in the party elections.
The Rembau member of parliament confirmed the move to contest the top party post in an interview with the South China Morning Post yesterday.
Khairy reconfirmed the move by re-tweeting a journalist’s original Tweet on the matter.
The former youth and sports minister put to rest allegations that he would contest the Umno president or deputy president post.
Meanwhile, Umno Youth vicechief and former senator Khairul Azwan Harun announced that he would contest the movement’s top post.
He believed that he could bring reforms to the party.
This, he said, was due to his experience as Umno Youth vicechief, and support from the grassroots.
The party polls will see Umno’s top positions, including the president and the deputy president posts, being contested.
The move to contest the posts was adopted following Umno and Barisan Nasional’s poor performance in the 14th General Election (GE14) on May 9.
Umno secretary-general Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor said on Thursday that registration of nominations for all positions was scheduled to commence on June 1.
He said the elections would be open to all, which meant that a party member need not be nominated by another.
“We can nominate ourselves for all positions. “For example, as I am under Putrajaya, I can fill out a form and submit it to the Divisional Secretariat for it to be reviewed before the form is submitted to the headquarters to ensure its eligibility.
“Likewise at the central level, there will be a committee and an election secretariat.
“They will study the nominations submitted and scrutinise the candidates to ensure their eligibility.”
There are three ways to register as a candidate:
Online registration from June 1 to June 17, or register via Umno division offices, or download the online registration form and submit it to the Umno headquarters on June 17 between 8am and 5pm. The final list of candidates will be displayed at Umno’s headquarters.
