KOTA BARU: A Form 2 student lost his right eye and injured his left hand in mishap while he was playing with firecrackers in Kampung Panji, near here, last Tuesday.

Eiman Najwan Anwar Fuad, 14, was with his friend and had placed the firecracker, a mercun bola, in a bottle when it exploded.

Mercun bola, a small, round firecracker often bearing a football motif, has been described by the authorities as among the more dangerous types of banned firecrackers due to its explosive power.

Eiman, a student of SMK Panji, went blind in the right eye and hurt his left hand. His friend had minor leg injuries.

Eiman’s mother, Rozita Zakaria, 41, said she was at home when she heard a loud bang outside.

“I rushed out and saw a boy lying on the ground, blood all over. I hugged the boy to comfort him, and when I realised he was my son, I almost fainted.

“I immediately called my husband and we rushed him to Universiti Sains Malaysia Hospital in Kubang Kerian,” said the mother of three at the hospital

She said she was told that her son was near the bottle and could run in time.

“The incident has left my son blind in one eye and with all fingers on his left hand injured.”

She said that before the incident, her son had asked her for RM1 to buy a drink.

“His friend later came to the house and asked him to go out, but he refused. I did not realise that he later sneaked out.”
