‘SAHUR’ BY THE BEACH

Event organised by youth attracts about 200 visitors to Pantai Batu Buruk daily

- KUALA TERENGGANU

AGROUP of Terengganu youths from the Car Food Sale Community has organised the “Car Food Sahur” programme at Pantai Batu Buruk here for the fourth year.

Its spokesman, Aril Arif Abd Razak, said the programme, which offered traditional dishes, attracted about 200 visitors each night.

“There are more visitors this year, probably because the number of vendors has increased to 25 from 18 last year.

“We have extended our operating hours from midnight to 5am so that more visitors can enjoy sahur with their families and friends.”

He said visitors would also be entertained by the KT Busker band.

“No fee is imposed on vendors. Part of the proceeds from the sales will be given to charity.

“This year, we collaborated with volunteers to hold breaking-of-fast events for orphans and distributed food to the homeless here.”

A visitor, Shazni Zainuddin, 31, said the “Car Food Sahur” programme provided an opportunity for youth to enjoy sahur and bond with family members and friends.

“In the city, it is hard to get food late at night because most shops close just after midnight.

“Here, I can have nasi minyak, laksa Terengganu and local cakes for sahur.”

Another visitor, Safuwan Mohd Saidi, said he and his family loved the idea of eating on a mat and enjoying the sea breeze.

“I look forward to having sahur in this relaxed manner each year during Ramadan.

“I have come here several times with my friends and family.”
