Stop politics of revenge, Umno urges PH govt
KUALA LUMPUR: Umno has expressed concern that civil servants who supported Barisan Nasional would end up becoming victims of a witch hunt by the new administration.
In a statement issued by its Strategic Communication Unit, the party highlighted the need to stop what it termed as “politics of revenge”.
It pointed out statements made by Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Negri Sembilan Menteri Besar Aminuddin Harun questioning the partiality of some civil servants because of their political leanings.
“We are worried that this would be construed as a threat and oppression of the civil service.
“We urge the Pakatan Harapan government to respect their rights and to treat the civil service fairly.
“If the country is to be united, to progress and to remain democratic, such blatant political witch hunts and vengeance must stop,” it said.
The unit said when BN was in power, opposition supporters in the civil service were never victimised as freedom of association was constitutionally enshrined.
“BN did not force them to support our party nor victimise them due to their political leanings.
“We had only asked them to serve the government of the day with loyalty and not let politics interfere with their work,” the statement
said.
