NO matter how modern a womis, an come Hari Raya, she will most likely be dressed in a baju kurung or kebaya. There were years when kaftrendy tans were and jubah was chosen for its utilitarianism (it’s easy to move in) but after the hype is over, the kurung and kebaya — in their many reinterpretations — remain the two main players for the celebration.
Which explains why this year, local designer Khoon Hooi banks on the kebaya for his bespoke collection. He pays homkebaya age to the found in the closet of his grandmother and dreams up a colcelebrates lection that the traditional with modern flourish.
The kebaya is transformed and appears in various styles and silhouettes, incorporating elements of the traditional baju kurung and kaftan — touched with detailing such as draping, scallop edges and floral embroidery.
The 18-piece collection works with a mix of materials such as fil coupe, satin, silk taffeta and jacquard — dominated with a rainbow of such as pink blush, fern green and pistachio.
Stylish standout pieces include the classic short kebaya and candy-striped sarong, and a lace kebarung paired with a tangerine inner.
Resplendent with rhinestone embellishment, rich embroidery and fine lace, the luxurious made-to-order collection also makes a play of quirky clashes. Think feminine floral paired with polka dots and checquered patterns.
