Getting to grips with university life

- ZULITA MUSTAFA UM Academic Enhancement and Leadership Development Centre director

THE transition from secondary school to university is one of the biggest one will ever make. What should one expect from the first year at university? Most undergraduates will be preoccupied with leaving home for the first time. And university is very different from school — students get a basic education during their school years as opposed to in-depth knowledge of their disciplines at university.

Dr Mahassan Mamat, who is Centre of Foundation Studies in Science deputy director (academic and student affairs) at UM, said that foundation students must adapt to the education setting and syllabus.

“Students attend lectures and tutorials, and work on projects. They are also encouraged to do independent study through blended learning which combines online digital media with traditional classroom methods; perform research at the library; and hold discussions with peers and lecturers.

“This situation is indeed very different from secondary school,” added Mahassan.

Fresh undergraduates should take the chance to enhance their newfound knowledge in their chosen fields.

“We advise them to take part in co-curricular activities to boost soft skills.”

As independent learners, undergraduates will need to learn to juggle studies, co-curricular activities and social life.
