‘Jamal used rat lane to flee’

-

KUALA LUMPUR: Police believe Datuk Seri Jamal Yunos has fled to Indonesia using “rat lanes” despite the wanted Red-shirt leader’s claim that he was still in the country.

However, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun said Jamal, who is Sungai Besar Umno division chief, could not be on the run for long.

He said police hoped to arrest Jamal soon as he is wanted for various offences.

“We know he is in Indonesia. And, it is most likely that he got there using rat lanes,” he said after launching Op Selamat 13 in conjunction with Hari Raya Aidilfitri at the TM convention centre here.

Jamal reportedly went missing after being admitted to the Ampang Puteri Specialist Hospital on May 25 for back pain. He was charged in the hospital with three offences and had pleaded not guilty.

He was allowed bail of RM3,000 for each charge, but he allegedly escaped just before the process could be completed.

One of the charges was for causing a public nuisance by smashing beer bottles in front of the Selangor state secretariat building in Shah Alam last year.

Fuzi said police had contacted their Indonesian counterparts to help track down the fugitive.

He also said action would be taken against the policemen on duty when Jamal escaped.
