This is the wish of grassroots members, says division chief
FEDERAL Territory Umno Youth has thrown its support behind Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah, whom it believe is the right candidate to helm Umno and spearhead the party’s revival.
Federal Territory Umno chief Datuk Mohd Razlan Rafii said this was the wish of the grassroots, who wanted to see change in the party’s leadership.
He said the Umno veteran, who is a former finance minister, could put up a strong challenge to the administration of Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, thus setting the party on its path to regain the administration of the country.
“We (Federal Territory Umno) see Tengku Razaleigh as a person whom we can give our support to head Umno.
“We ask that Tengku Razaleigh consider the decision to contest the party presidency.
“We are not rejecting Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi as president. We thank him and those who are elected have our fullest support.
“However, the grassroots is hoping for a person who can embody Umno’s struggle and help it regain its former glory,” he said at the Umno Youth executive council meet-and-greet event 2018-2021 here.
When asked on Barisan Nasional’s possible candidate for opposition leader in Parliament, Razlan said, Rembau member of parliament Khairy Jamaluddin was the best candidate, given his charisma and debating prowess.
“The opposition leader need not necessarily be someone in the party’s highest level. If it is Khairy, it would instil fear (in the opponents).
“If he partnered with Tengku Razaleigh, I think even Dr Mahathir would have to think twice (when facing them) as it would be an even match.”
