QURAN HOUR GETS ROYAL SUPPORT
Sultan Nazrin attends global Quranic recital programme at IIUM
THE World #Quran Hour (WQH) this year received the royal support of Sultan of Perak Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah. The state ruler was present at the main event’s location at Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Mosque in the International Islamic University of Malaysia (IIUM) campus in Gombak in a show of support and solidarity with the ummah.
Sultan Nazrin was greeted by PKR de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Education Minister Dr Maszlee Malik, Islamic Development Department (Jakim) director-general Datuk Mohamad Nordin Ibrahim, IIUM rector Professor Datuk Seri Dr Zaleha Kamarudin and Yayasan Warisan Ummah Ikhlas founder Datuk Dr Hussamuddin Yaacob.
The programme was attended by 7,000 people and began with the reading of several verses of the Quran.
This is the third edition of the WQH, which is commemorated worldwide.
Besides the event at IIUM, the programme was held at 700 other locations in Malaysia. Worldwide, there were some 3,000 locations where Quranic verses were recited simultaneously.
Hussamuddin said he was optimistic that the programme, if done well, would improve the lives of Muslims.
“Since we started hosting this programme, more people have begun studying the Quran. Before this, there were many who could read the Quran multiple times, but not understand its meaning.
“With WQH, we want to stress that we should read the Quran sentence by sentence, page by page and surah by surah, and understand each one before moving on.
“We want to make this part of Muslim culture, so that it becomes a ‘tsunami’, which will lead to every Muslim being able to read and understand the Quran in 10 years’ time.”
