SOME 250 underprivileged students were all smiles yesterday as they were taken to Mydin Mall in Bukit Mertajam, Penang, for Hari Raya Aidilfitri shopping, courtesy of Yayasan Persatuan Pengimpot Kereta Melayu Malaysia (Pekema).

Pekema vice-president Datuk Nadzir Sheikh Fadzir said the children were from here, Bandar Baharu and Seberang Perai.

He said RM200 had been allocated for each student and that the organisation was grateful to Mydin Mall, which offered discounts.

“Pekema set aside RM50,000 for this programme. This is the 15th time we are doing it. We have been working with Mydin Mall for the past four years,” he said, adding that the children were allowed to choose Hari Raya Aidilfitri clothes of their choices.

Present were Bandar Baharu assemblyman Datuk Norsabrina Mohd Noor and Puteri Umno members from the Kulim/Bandar Baharu division.

Norsabrina said she was grateful to Pekema for helping needy children.

She said it would help make the children’s Hari Raya Aidilfitri more enjoyable.

Nurul Ainun Balkis Mohamad Saiful, a 9year-old pupil of SK Permatang Kerat Telunjuk in Bandar Baharu, said she was excited as she could choose the clothes herself.

“This year, Hari Raya Aidilfitiri will be more exciting for me as I have new clothes. I can’t wait to put them on.”
