Football-themed film fest

The Hungarian Film Fiesta 2018 celebrates the 65th anniversar­y of the game between Hungary and England as well as welcomes the FIFA World Cup 2018, writes Dennis Chua

WITH the support of the Embassy of Hungary in Kuala Lumpur, Golden Screen Cinemas and Cinema Online, are presenting the football-themed Hungarian Film Fiesta In Malaysia from now until Sunday at GSC Pavilion KL in Jalan Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur.

It commemorat­es the 65th anniversar­y of the football game between Hungary and England in which Hungary won 6-3, becoming the first team to beat England in London in 90 years. It is also to also welcome the 21st FIFA World Cup 2018, which will be held in Russia.

The Hungarian Film Festival 2018 is headlined by Puskas Hungary, which tells the story of legendary soccer player Ferenc Puskas, who started from the Budapest slums and became an internatio­nal star; living his life, doing the one thing he loved and knew best — play soccer. After a physical and mental breakdown, he returned to the top with an amazing effort once again in his 30s, and became a world-renowned forward for Real Madrid.

Three other movies to be screened at GSC Pavilion are a documentar­y and two comedy films.

Barca’s Untold Legends introduces football fans to the “Messi of the 1950s”, a Hungarian named Laszlo Kubala.

Kubala’s fame was the reason for the constructi­on of Camp Nou and it still stands as the largest football stadium in Europe.

Brazils is about a town in Hungary, where the government announced that the Gypsy minority’s football team called “Brazilians” could also take part in the national football championsh­ips.

Events, emotions and anger take unpredicta­ble directions in this comedy.

The title 6:3 or Past Plays Itself is a comedy and suspense-filled film about a man appearing and spoiling the atmosphere by predicting the goals of the long-awaited game between England and Hungary on Nov 25, 1953.

The films are screened at 5pm and 7.30pm daily. Free tickets for the Hungarian Film Fiesta can be redeemed from the GSC Pavilion KL ticketing counter from now, on a first-come first-served basis.
