ASSET DECLARATION SYSTEM TO BE FINALISED
Cabinet committee will meet before Parliament convenes, says Abu Kassim
THE mechanism of asset declarations by government officials is being discussed and the final decision will be made in the Cabinet Committee on Anti-Corruption meeting.
Governance, Integrity and Anti-Corruption Centre (GIACC) director-general Tan Sri Abu Kassim Mohamed said the declaration of assets by members of the administration was one of the matters to be discussed in the meeting, which would be held before the first Parliament session.
“In the (cabinet committee) meeting on June 8, Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad expressed his commitment, as well as the government’s, to discuss matters relating to the asset declaration mechanism and the practice of accepting gifts.”
He said the prime minister also proposed that asset declaration information by government officials to him be handed over to anti-corruption agencies.
“GIACC welcomes any suggestions, views and input to create a more effective mechanism regarding asset declaration.”
He said GIACC would discuss with stakeholders to obtain their views and feedback.

He said GIACC also welcomed feedback from political parties and civil community organisations on the issue.
On June 1, Dr Mahathir agreed to set up GIACC to coordinate and monitor all activities on governance, integrity and anti-corruption, apart from agreeing to appoint Abu Kassim, who is former Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission chief commissioner, as its head.
GIACC will be responsible in planning, formulating strategies and evaluating policies to ensure that all government affairs are conducted based on good governance, integrity and zero tolerance for corrupt practices.
Among GIACC’s initial tasks agreed by the prime minister was to ensure that the 21 pledges on governance and anti-corruption in the government’s manifesto were given special attention to be implemented in phases.
