Umno: Don’t interfere in party elections

-

KUALA LUMPUR: Umno has warned other political party members to stop interfering in its party election process, which will take place on June 30.

In a press statement yesterday, it said it wanted government leaders to stop giving statements that could pit party members against each another.

“Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s statement on who is more qualified to lead Umno is described as being a ‘busybody’. Umno has never tried to interfere in Pakatan Harapan’s internal issues.

“Is he (Dr Mahathir) bearing a grudge against Umno, which he once led for 22 years?” said a statement from the party’s strategic communications unit.

The statement also slammed DAP leader Lim Kit Siang and former international trade and industry minister Tan Sri Rafidah Aziz who, it claimed, had tried to intervene it its issues.

“Umno feels this intervention attempt is aimed at slandering the party that has been fighting for the struggles of the Malays all this time.

“They (Pakatan Harapan) should remember that individually, Umno won 54 seats in the previous election, which proves that it is able to stand alone without any coalition, such as Barisan Nasional or PH.”

The statement also said PH was not a strong coalition.

“Are they brave enough to break the coalition and face Umno one-on-one?”

The statement also urged Pakatan members to stop acting like a “kingmaker” by trying to tell Umno members who should lead the party.
