MEDIA PRIMA NETS 400M VIEWERSHIP

TV3, ntv7, TV9, 8TV news segments popular choices during GE14

-

MEDIA Prima Television Networks (MPTN) came out top in news delivery by securing a 400 million viewership across all its television stations during the 14th General Election (GE14) last month.

According to a Nielsen Malaysia report, the figures were based on an estimated 17 million out of 21 million television viewers in the country who followed news coverage on TV3, ntv7, TV9 and 8TV during that period.

MPTN chief executive officer Johan Ishak said the increase in the number of viewership on all Media Prima Bhd (MPB) TV channels was proof that the public had faith in the group’s credibility.

“(According to) Nielsen Malaysia’s research, as well as its consumer and media reports, of the 32 million population in the country, 21 million are those who watch TV and are over 4 years old.

“The figure is the highest ever recorded over the past five years. Indirectly, MPTN’s news segments remain No. 1, not just during the GE14 season. Its momentum is gaining to this day.

“This Nielsen report proves that Malaysians continue to make MPTN their top choice, especially Buletin Utama (BU) on TV3.”

Last month, Nielsen Malaysia reported that TV3, 8TV and TV9 news segments dominated 81 per cent of the market, estimating that one out of 17 million viewers followed MPTN’s news broadcast 23 times for the whole of last month.

BU remains in first place, with an average increase of more than 25 per cent compared with April, marking BU’s total viewership at 3.78 million.

For the Chinese news segment, 8TV Mandarin News remains No. 1 with a 1.3 million viewership, followed by Mandarin 7 (900,000), while TV9’s news recorded a 1.7 million viewership.

Johan said the increase in viewership was due to three key elements driven by the newsroom team.

“This achievement is driven by three factors — accuracy and transparency of news, speed of news channelled and professionalism of journalism.

“In the wake of the change in government, consumer demand and market sentiment, we have strengthened the concept of adherence to professionalism based on ethics.”

The New Straits Times Press’ online portals — Harian Metro Online, BH Online and NST Online — dominated the top five on May 9 and 10.

Harian Metro Online recorded 8.4 million page views, followed by BH Online (4.8 million) and NST Online (2.6 million).
