INTERNATIONAL Islamic University Malaysia (UIAM) student Muhammad Syazani Jemy has made the country proud. This was after he was appointed to lead the “Qiamullail” programme on the last 10 nights of Ramadan at the Oxford Islamic Centre mosque at the University of Oxford in London.

He also led the Hari Raya Aidilfitri prayers as the imam on the first day of Syawal at the university.

Islamic Development Department of Malaysia (Jakim) director-general Mohamad Nordin Ibrahim said the UIAM first-year student had also garnered a lot of praise from those at Oxford.

“As the institution that gave Syazani the chance to sharpen and test his ability in reciting the Quran, Jakim is proud of his achievement.

“His excellent performance is not just limited to this. Syazani came in first at the national-level of the Masters of Quran and Hafazan Al-Quran competition last year. He was placed second at the international level.

“Through Jakim, he has also represented Malaysia at international Quran recitation competition overseas, such as in Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Indonesia, the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait,” he said here yesterday.

Nordin said Syazani’s role for the last 10 days of Ramadan and as the Aidilfitri imam was made possible through the collaboration between Jakim and the Oxford Islamic Centre.

This was a result of the joint initiative by Datuk Dr Afifi Al Akiti, who is a fellow at the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies, and the “orang kaya-kaya” Perak.

“Well done and congratulations to Muhammad Syazani. It is our hope that such programmes will continue in the future to produce more Quran readers in Malaysia,” he added.
