Ku Li: I backed winning candidates

-

KUANTAN: The election outcome of Umno’s party wings has breathed new life into the party to continue its struggles.

Umno presidential candidate Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah said he was happy as many candidates he supported won at the Youth, Wanita and Puteri wing polls.

“All those who won (in the party wing elections) are those whom I supported. Insya Allah, they can breathe new life into the party,” he said at a Pahang Umno event at Wisma Belia, Indera Mahkota here yesterday.

Present was state Umno liaison committee chairman Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob.

As at 2pm yesterday, Umno Supreme Council member Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki was confirmed to have won the Umno Youth chief position.

The Puteri Umno chief post was won by Datuk Zahida Zarik Khan.

Asyraf beat seven other candidates, among them Umno Youth vice-chief Datuk Khairul Azwan Harun and Pahang Umno Youth chief Mohd Shahar Abdullah.

Zahida beat Puteri Umno executive councillor Hazreena Hashim.

For the next stage of the Umno elections on June 30, Tengku Razaleigh, popularly known as Ku Li, will face acting party president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and former Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin.

He said his chances of winning the presidency were encouraging based on his meetings with party members in three states.

“I have met (Umno) members in the Federal Territory, Selangor and Pahang. So far, it is quite encouraging. More than that, I dare not say.

“After this, I will go to Terengganu to meet (party) members there,” said Tengku Razaleigh, who is also Gua Musang member of parliament.
