‘Don’t use power to seek revenge’

-

JOHOR BARU: The government has been urged not to abuse the power entrusted to it by the people to seek revenge.

Johor Baru Umno chief Tan Sri Shahrir Abdul Samad said Pakatan Harapan, which previously accused Barisan Nasional of power abuse, would be no different if it was seen to also misuse the power it was entrusted with.

Malaysia, said the Umno veteran, was a democratic country and the people had made their decision.

“As such, the government has to act responsibly. I do not fear the act of vengeance of those who lost because they have no power. I fear the vengeance of the winners as they have power.

“Why accuse BN of abusing its power when they (PH), in their bid for revenge, also misuse their authority. We will wait and see,” he said at the Johor Baru Umno Hari Raya Aidilfitri open house yesterday.

In another development, Shahrir said Gerakan’s decision to leave BN was expected and had no bearing on Umno.

“This was predicted. Everyone has a right to make his or her own decision. If they feel that leaving BN is the best move, they are welcome to do so.

“This poses no problems for Umno. But surely, this is not the decision made each time there is a crisis. What about when things are stable and there are no problems?

“But that’s politics for you.”
