Kedah speaker to be named on July 4

-

ALOR SETAR: The state legislative assembly speaker candidate will be announced on the first day of its session on July 4.

It is learned that the name of the speaker will be announced after a discussion is held on the first day of the assembly under the Pakatan Harapan state government.

State executive councillor Zamri Yusuf said the selection of the speaker and deputy speaker would be done through consultation with 36 assemblymen and 18 government representatives. “There is no big issue in regard to the appointments. Those selected will be made known on July 4,” said the Suka Menanti assemblyman yesterday.

He said Pas had the right to propose names for the two positions. But based on the number of seats held by PH, it would be impossible for it to support candidates from Pas.

“We have submitted the names of candidates to fill the positions of speaker and deputy to the state assembly.

“We have a majority of 18 state seats (out of the 36 seats). So, there shouldn’t be any problem in appointing the speaker and his deputy.”

Zamri was commenting on a statement by Pas secretary-general Datuk Takiyuddin Hassan who said a list of names was submitted for the speaker and deputy speaker candidates.

The party had proposed state Pas commissioner Dr Ahmad Fakhruddin Syeikh Fakhrurazi as speaker and Bukit Pinang assemblyman Wan Romaini Wan Salim as deputy.

Takiyuddin had said apart from PH, both Pas and Barisan Nasional had the right to name their candidates.
