RTD: Raya op effective, 19pc drop in summonses

-

TAPAH: The Road Transport Department’s (RTD) Education, Prevention and Enforcement Strategy, implemented in conjunction with Hari Raya Aidilfitri, has reduced the number of accidents.

RTD director-general Datuk Seri Shaharuddin Khalid said the strategy included going undercover and carrying out motorcycle patrols.

He said the approach was considered effective judging by the drop in summonses issued by 19 per cent or 30,820 compared with 37,913 summonses recorded in the same period last year.

“This year, RTD officers operated incognito as passengers in express buses.

“A total of 139 summonses were issued to 658 express drivers.

“We carried out checks at bus terminals.

“Eleven bus drivers tested positive in their urine tests and their licences will be revoked, upon conviction,” he said after monitoring the traffic by air around the Tapah Rest and Service area along the North-South Expressway.

According to Shaharuddin, motorcycle patrols from June 8 had issued 5,341 summonses for various offences, including for having no driving licence and for vehicles with expired road taxes.

He said 200 RTD motorcycles were mobilised to patrol accident-prone areas.

“This includes a special motorcycle operation on June 12 and 13, which saw 25,304 motor-cycles inspected and 4,400 summonses issued.”

He said 35,948 summonses under the Automated Awareness Security System had been issued.

“The summonses involved two offences, for exceeding the speed limit (33,727 summonses) and for traffic light violations (2,221 summonses).
