TWO members of parliament have confirmed that they will be appointed deputy ministers.

Kuantan member of parliament Fuziah Salleh said she received a call from Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad regarding her appointment as deputy minister in the Prime Minister’s Department in charge of religious affairs.

“I initially felt that I was in the wrong place (with regard to the appointment). However, Dr Mahathir was hoping for a revamp of the department.

“After seeking advice from PKR president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, she suggested that I accept the offer.

“It’s a male-dominated world, and maybe there are areas of women empowerment from Islamic perspectives that I could focus on, as well as empowering syariah courts,” she said at the Dewan Rakyat after a briefing session for MPs yesterday.

Hang Tuah Jaya member of parliament Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin said he received a call from Dr Mahathir on the fourth day of Hari Raya regarding his appointment as deputy primary industry minister.

He said the Primary Industry Ministry, which usually specialised in managing the commodity sector, would be given a broader scope by Dr Mahathir to include the growth of the downstream industry.

“Our main focus is to continue discussions with AliBaba Group executive chairman Jack Ma because there are some interesting ideas highlighted during the meeting with the previous prime minister,” said the PKR vice-president.
