‘Cool Tools 4 Skool’ to juggle college life
WITH only 24 hours in a day, it can be a challenge for a student to juggle his social life, maintain good academic record and still have a good night’s sleep. To help college-going students navigate their hectic lives, Google Malaysia collaborated with Tunku Abdul Rahman University College (TAR UC) to organise a fun and interactive session called “Google Cafe: Cool Tools 4 Skool”.
In addition to helping students get the most out of their time at college, the workshop also served as a kick-off for a studentled online awareness campaign. Student participants ― second year Public Relations students pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree ― are required to use online media channels to raise awareness about the free and convenient tools among their peers as part of their coursework.
Students will work on the online awareness campaign also called “Cool Tools 4 Skool’, from the ground up, to hone their skills to research, plan, create content and manage online engagements.
“At TAR UC, we value the ability for students to gain a holistic experience in a handson campaign. By collaborating with Google, we can do just that as the project allows students to engage their peers using online tools, in an effort that also happens to be socially meaningful,” said TAR UC Faculty of Communication and Creative Industries dean Dearna Kee.
Students who attended the Google Cafe conducted by Google App administrator Joey Tham were shown how the Google Calendar can help them manage their time by setting important reminders for assignments and exams.
As students have to juggle assignment deadlines, pop quizzes, midterm tests and final exams, it can be easy for them to miss classes or other important events due to lack of good time management. With Google Maps, students can also easily plan their commute efficiently.
In the interest of helping students find relevant and credible sources to complete their assignments, the workshop explained how Google Search can be helpful, while Google Scholars offer access to scholarly literature across an array of publishing formats and disciplines.
As learning to collaborate is a big part of the college experience, the workshop showed how students can use Google Drive, Google

back to the community. In the past, we’ve had Google Cafes for a variety of audiences like senior citizens, parents and the media. But for this session, I believe that we’ve got an opportunity to see its social impact on a larger scale by allowing the student participants to internalise what we have taught them and have them share it with others in their network,” said Google Malaysia Communications and Public Affairs head Zeffri Yusof.
