LEE Chong Wei has made it clear that he will be the underdog when he plays World No 1 Victor Axelsen for a semi-final slot in the Malaysia Open at the Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil today.

Chong Wei advanced to the quarterfinals with a straightforward 21-7, 21-7 win over South Korean veteran Lee Hyunn II while Axelsen was forced to work harder before notching a 23-21, 19-21, 21-11 success over Thailand’s Tanongsak Saensomboonsuk in the second round yesterday.

Chong Wei, 36, said he is determined to keep his hopes of a 12th Malaysia Open title alive but admitted that Axelsen is the clear favourite.

“Axelsen is the World No 1 so I have nothing to lose. I will, however, try my best to give him a fight,” said Chong Wei.

“It is my goal to win a 12th title here and set a record which is impossible for others to break.”

Based on current form, Chong Wei has a slight advantage as he defeated Axelsen at the Thomas Cup in Bangkok last month.

Chong Wei also praised the fighting spirit shown by Hyun II, who is two years older than him.

“The last time I played Hyun II was at the 2012 All England. Although, my win today (yesterday) can be considered easy, I am amazed by the spirit he showed.

“He is my senior in the sport but he is still playing until now,” he added.

Defending champion Lin Dan of China was shown the exit by compatriot Shi Yuqi. The latter clinched a straightforward 21-19, 21-12 win and will play Indonesian Tommy Sugiarto in the quarterfinals.

In the women’s singles, Malaysia’s Goh Jin Wei caused an upset by overcoming seventh seed Sung Ji Hyun of South Korea 15-21, 21-18, 23-21. She plays World No 1 Tan Tzu Ying, who defeated Canadian Michelle Li 2111, 21-13, in the quarter-finals.
