Dr Mahathir: Najib’s arrest imminent
JAKARTA: Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said he expected authorities to arrest former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak soon.
The prime minister, during a two-day official visit here, said the people had been calling for Najib to be brought to court for his alleged role in the siphoning of funds from 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB). Investigators were working to compile evidence on the case.
“Many are asking why no action has been taken after so long. But instead, he is treated as a former prime minister.
“I think (it will happen) soon. To bring such a case to court, we need to find sufficient evidence that will stand up in court,” he said during a special session at the Malaysian embassy with around 300 Malaysian residents in Indonesia here on Thursday.
Dr Mahathir said investigators needed to establish the paper trail and prove that the money originated from 1MDB.
“(Investigators) have to ensure Najib, his wife (Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor) and (businessman) Jho Low’s involvement (in the scandal)... they have to collect strong evidence so that it will not be countered by Najib’s lawyers.”
He said the government had been urged to reopen old cases from the previous administration, including the murder of Mongolian national Altantuya Shaariibuu.
Assuring that everything would be conducted in accordance with the law, Dr Mahathir thanked Malaysians, including those abroad, for supporting Pakatan Harapan in the last general election.
