DATUK Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi became Umno’s 8th president when he won the post by garnering 93 votes from 191 divisions.

His nearest rival, former Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin, 42, obtained 51 votes. Umno veteran Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah, 81, obtained only 23 votes.

Zahid, the former deputy prime minister, secured the confidence of 3.5 million party members in winning the top party post.

He took over the position of Umno acting president after Datuk Seri Najib Razak announced his resignation as party president and Barisan Nasional chairman following the coalition’s defeat in the 14th General Election (GE14).

Umno’s deputy president post was won by former Negri Sembilan menteri besar Datuk Mohamad Hasan, who garnered 75 votes against Umno information chief Tan Sri Annuar Musa, who got 55 votes.

The deputy president post has been vacant since February 2016, when then deputy president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin was suspended from the party and sacked four months later. Zahid had been discharging the duties of deputy president since.

As for the three vice-presidency positions, former minister Datuk Ismail Sabri Yaakob took the lead by obtaining 16 votes, followed closely by former second finance minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani with 15 votes, former minister Datuk Mahdzir Khalid (14 votes) and former Johor menteri besar Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin (13 votes).

Other contestants for the positions are Datuk Tajuddin Abdul Rahman with 12 votes, former Terengganu menteri besar Datuk Ahmad Said (one vote) and Sheikh Razali Sheikh Hamad (zero).

Vice-president Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein did not contest the party polls.

The third post of vice-president has been vacant since Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal quit the party after he was suspended.

A total of 106 candidates were contesting the 25 posts of Supreme Council members in the party election.

A total of 165,000 delegates from 191 divisions voted for the 2018-2021 term.

The Umno election has been postponed since 2016 so the party could concentrate on GE14 last May.
