‘RETURN FUNDS IF THEY ARE FROM 1MDB’
Umno needs to prove the source of money in accounts, says Dr M
UMNO has to return its funds if there is evidence that money in the party’s account came from 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB).
Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said the move to freeze Umno’s accounts by the government’s enforcement agency was to enable further investigation into the case.
He said Umno needed to prove the source of its funds.
“We want to know where the hundreds of millions of ringgit in Umno’s accounts came from.
“If it came from 1MDB, then the money needs to be returned.
“We are investigating the money that the party received,” he said at Kota Mahsuri’s Hari Raya Aidilfitri open house here yesterday.
He said the move to freeze the accounts of central and state Umno was to probe the origin of the money in them.
Dr Mahathir, who is also Langkawi member of parliament, is on a two-day visit to the island.
He started his visit yesterday by opening the 29th annual general meeting of Koperasi Pembangunan Daerah Langkawi before hosting a Hari Raya Aidilfitri open house at the Lada Sports Complex.
Apart from attending the Kota Mahsuri open house, he was scheduled to inspect the premises of the Langkawi Parliamentary Service Centre.
On Friday, the Malaysian AntiCorruption Commission froze Umno’s accounts to assist in the investigation into the 1MDB case.
Selangor, Kedah and Johor Umno had confirmed that the party’s bank accounts had been frozen.
