‘TAKE BRIBERY SERIOUSLY’
Don’t make it butt of jokes, report it immediately, says Syed Saddiq
DO not make the act of bribery the butt of jokes. Instead, lodge a report immediately with the authorities if it occurs, said Youth and Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman.
He said the community should cultivate the culture of viewing corruption seriously.
“Corruption should be viewed as serious. Whatever type of bribes, even as little as RM5 or up to billions of ringgit, is still considered bribery and should not be the butt of jokes,” he said after an Inland Revenue Board’s (LHDN) state-level social responsibility programme at Sekolah Kebangsaan Parit 5 here yesterday.
Present were LHDN Compliance deputy chief executive officer Abdul Manap Dim, Johor LHDN director Mohd Ramli A. Wahid and Bukit Naning assemblyman Md Ysahrudin Kusni.
Yesterday, Deputy Prime Minister Datin Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail said 2,238 corruption-related offenders between 2013 and May this year, or 55.2 per cent, were youths.
Dr Wan Azizah said it was alarming as the group was the country’s future leaders.
Syed Saddiq said the ministry had outlined three proposals to combat corruption, especially among youths, such as enhancing further the role of the Malaysian Anti Corruption Commission (MACC).
“We are also undertaking amendments to the laws, including the segregation of power and political interference, and extensive coverage of corruption cases.”
Earlier, 30 underprivileged students received spectacles and four schools in Muar parliamentary constituency received teaching aids.
The Muar member of parliament also commented on a 28second video of him picking up rubbish left behind in Bukit Jalil National Stadium by football fans after the FA Cup final on Saturday, which had gone viral .
He said the act was done spontaneously and hoped it would be practised by supporters while at the stadium.
