SUNGAI KANDIS BY-ELECTION ON AUG 4
Nomination on July 21, says EC
THE Sungai Kandis byelection is set for Aug 4, with nomination day on July 21. These dates were announced by Election Commission deputy chairman Tan Sri Othman Mahmood at a press conference yesterday.
Othman said the campaign period would be 14 days beginning from the date of nomination to 11.59pm on Aug 3.
He said EC had set July 9 and 21 for the opening and closing dates for postal voters inside and outside of Malaysia.
He said Shah Alam Mayor Datuk Ahmad Zaharin Mohd Saad would be the returning officer.
Othman said EC would establish an election campaign enforcement team to monitor the campaigning.
He said EC had decided to extend the voting duration for the by-election from 8am to 5.30pm.
He said 21 additional voting streams would be added for the by-election, with two voting streams for voters aged 60 and above.
“EC welcomes non-governmental organisations and any interested bodies to apply to be monitors for the by-election.”
The Sungai Kandis seat fell vacant after its incumbent, Mat Shuhaimi Shafiei, died of lymphoma cancer on July 2.
In the 14th General Election, Sungai Kandis saw a four-cornered fight.
Mat Shuhaimi defended his seat against BN’s Datuk Kamaruzzaman Johari, Pas’ Mohd Yusof Abdullah and Parti Rakyat Malaysia’s Hanafiah Husin.
Mat Shuhaimi obtained 23,998 votes, with a majority of 12,480, defeating Kamaruzzaman, who obtained 11,518 votes.
Yusof received 7,573 votes, while Hanafiah, 76 votes.
