Welfare foundation launches Palestine fund

-

PUTRAJAYA: The National Welfare Foundation (YKN) has launched the Palestine People’s Fund to complement the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) for Palestine Refugees in the Near East.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail said the fund was launched following a request from UNRWA for aid from the government.

She said Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad was informed of the agency’s objectives, adding that the government took the initiative to help the people of Palestine.

She said UNRWA had been facing a serious financial crisis since early this year after the United States withdrew more than RM1 billion in aid.

“The agency has been facing financial issues after the US stopped the aid. They need money to fund programmes and projects.”

She said if the situation persisted, Palestinian schools, which were supposed to resume classes next month, might remain closed.

Those who wish to donate to the YKN-Palestine People’s Fund can send their donations to Alliance Islamic Bank account number 1601-4001-0011-300.
