Ministry mulls heavier penalties

-

PUTRAJAYA: The Transport Ministry will look into the possibility of imposing stiffer penalties for drink driving.

Its minister, Anthony Loke, said his officers would review the effectiveness of present laws to see if they were adequate or needed to be amended.

He said the ministry would look for the best possible solution to prevent incidents involving drink driving.

He cited an example where four people were killed in a road crash in Tawau due to a drunk driver.

“I am saddened by what happened and will find a way ( to prevent such an accident from reccuring). If the laws are not adequate, we will make them tighter.

“As of today, I have yet to get the full report on the (Tawau) case. I just read about it in the news reports.

“But I will get a complete report on the incident (soon),” he said before flagging off a convoy of 22 Porsche sports cars heading for Bangkok for the 70th Porsche anniversary celebration.

It was reported on Sunday that four people were killed and two injured in the four-vehicle crash at Jalan Chong Thien Voon, Tawau, Sabah.

It is learnt that a 34-year-old woman, who was driving a Toyota Vios allegedly under the influence of alcohol, lost control of her car and entered the opposite lane in the 1.15am incident.

The car collided with a Toyota Hiace, a Perodua Bezza and Myvi, which rammed into several people in the BDC Commercial Centre parking area.
