Universities (GLUs) provide some of the best value in tertiary education solutions with their niche industry-driven programmes, making them excellent choices for Malaysian students looking to further their studies.

Not only do some of them offer programmes which are unavailable anywhere else in the region, but in general, GLUs offer a variety of benefits to students.

GLU chairman Professor Dr Mohamed Ibrahim Abdul Mutalib, who is also Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP) vice-chancellor, said the universities academic offerings are rigorous, high quality and lead to fulfilling careers.

“Our campuses and the facilities we provide are extremely high standard, and it is our promise to our students that they will be provided with an excellent learning environment,” he said this at the Discover GLU Open Day at IOI Resort City Mall Putrajaya recently.

Also at the launch were Multimedia University (MMU) President Professor Datuk Dr Ahmad Rafi Mohamed Eshaq, Universiti Tenaga Nasional (Uniten) vice-chancellor Datuk Professor Dr Kamal Nasharuddin Mustapha, and Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL) president Professor Datuk Dr Mazliham Mohd Su’ud.

The event was organised by four institutes of higher learning, an alliance of MMU, UNITEN, UTP and UniKL.

Discover GLU aims to introduce the GLUs as well as to highlight to local students the benefits of enrolling in any of their industrydriven programmes in the universities.

Mohamed Ibrahim said the niche area of the programmes offered by GLUs are related to the core business of their respective parent companies, for instances, MMU which is owned by the Telekom Malaysia, while UNITEN is established by Tenaga Nasional Bhd, UTP is a Petronasowned university while UniKL is initiated by Majlis Amanah Rakyat.

He added the domain of ICT and telecommunication is extensively championed by MMU, while the fields of electronic and electrical engineering are mastered by UNITEN, the fields of oils and gas engineering are pioneered by UTP, while UniKL focuses on business and entrepreneurial technical fields.

GLU students and graduates have been on the cutting edge of industries, much to the benefit of their employers. Successful GLU graduates came not only from the niche areas but across all the collected offerings.

“Although it is common to hear of graduates who find it hard to find jobs, with GLUs, our graduates are able to enter the job market successfully,” said Mohamed Ibrahim with the hope that the Open Day will be one way to inform the public on GLUs as an option for tertiary education.
