SMK St Paul come out tops in La Salle Games

schools in Malaysia are known for two things: good English and good sport tradition.

Last Saturday, they showed their sporting spirits when the La Salle Games were held.

Eight schools took part. They were SMK St Francis (SFI) of Melaka, SMK St Paul (SPI) of Seremban, SMK St John (SJI) of Kuala Lumpur, St John’s Internatio­nal School (SJIS), SMK La Salle Brickfield­s (LSB), SMK La Salle Sentul (LSS), SMK La Salle Klang (LSK) and hosts SMK La Salle Petaling Jaya (LSPJ).

SPI emerged as the overall champions by winning two gold, two silver and recording two fourth placing.

SPI paddlers emerged as champions in table tennis by outclassin­g SJI 3-0, SJIS 3-0 and SFI 3-0 in the first round, as well as winning against SJIS 3-0, LSK 3-0 and LSPJ 2-1 in the final round.

In badminton, SPI breezed through all their matches with identical scores of 2-0, namely against LSB and SJI in the group stage as well as LSPJ in the final. At the MBPJ hockey stadium, in a keenly contested final, hosts LSPJ beat SPI 2-1 in a penalty shootout while SFI and SJI were declared joint third after losing in their semi-finals.

SFI’s cagers were too strong in basketball, trouncing SPI 17-0 in a one sided final.

Hosts LSPJ edged LSK 4-3 in a

penalty shootout in the football final after a goalless 90 minutes while LSS defeated SPI 2-0 to take third spot.

In the 4 x 1.8km road relay, SFI clocked 30 minutes 16 seconds to take top honours, followed by LSPJ 31:29s, LSK 32:29s while SPI finished fourth in 33:58s.

SPI’s co-curricular senior assistant Shantini Thilaga Lingam said: ”SPI is very happy to be part of this La Sallian Games revival and to have been crowned overall champions is an added bonus to our committed team of teachers and students.”
