Panel to resolve unemployment
KUALA LUMPUR: The Youth and Sports Ministry plans to set up a committee to resolve unemployment among youth and ensure quality jobs for them.
Its minister, Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman, said the government takes youth employment seriously and wanted to ensure every one of them was employed.
“A report by Bank Negara Malaysia earlier this year showed the youth unemployment rate was at 11.7 per cent, which is three times higher than the national unemployment (rate).
“There is a belief that youth don’t want to work in the 3D (dirty, difficult and dangerous) sectors, but there are reports saying that they’re willing to work as fruit pickers in Australia or become illegal construction workers in South Korea,” he said after launching the Aspire Graduate Exhibition of Career and Post Graduate 2018 here yesterday. Present was Graduan managing director Elia Talib.
Syed Saddiq said he believed collaboration between the government and corporations could reduce youth unemployment.
Through cooperation with Graduan Aspire, which organises the largest career exhibition, the ministry will ensure that jobs are not concentrated in the Klang Valley.
Syed Saddiq praised the Graduan Aspire 2018, which was seen as the best platform in offering job opportunities for youth.
