‘Syria may be divided into 3 regions’

-

ANKARA: Reports have emerged from Turkey contending that Syria will be divided into three — the eastern, western and central regions — controlled by Turkey, the United States-Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) and RussiaDamascus alliance.

The move to establish separate control in the three regions was being discussed, National Coalition for Syrian Revolution and opposition forces member Fuat Aliko told the Yeni Safak daily.

Following the evacuation of Fua and Keferya villages, which are connected to Idlib, a “Sunni corridor” map, including Hama, Aleppo and Idlib, would crystalise, Aliko added.

From the second half of this year, the United States and PKK will administer the east, Turkey and the Free Syria Army (FSA) would administer central areas, and Russia and the Assad regime will administer the south and western areas, Aliko said.

Other reports said Turkey had started issuing identity cards to ensure easier verification for people in territories under its control.

Great political and military progress has been made regarding Turkish control of Hama, Aleppo and Idlib.

The return of more than three million civilians from Turkey and Europe to Aleppo would begin, with the withdrawal of regime forces and Shia militias from the region, he said.

The upcoming period will be one of diplomacy and politics as opposed to military moves.

The multidimensional process that included Turkey also included regional and global actors, Aliko said.
