LOW Wee Wern scored a bittersweet win over national teammate S. Sivasangari to book her spot in the women’s final at the Malaysian Open yesterday.

The former World No 5, who is looking sharper with each match, got her revenge against Sivasangari with an 11-6, 11-8, 119 win at the National Squash Centre in Bukit Jalil to set up a clash with Japan’s Satomi Watanabe in the final today.

Satomi had downed top seeded Egyptian Omneya Abdel Kawy 114, 11-5, 11-6 in their semi-final.

Wee Wern, competing in her first tournament in 20 months due to a knee injury, had lost in five sets to Sivasangari in the final of the Ohana National Championships earlier this month.

The National Championships final was also to decide who would fill the second slot, after Nicol David, in the individual event at the Indonesia Asian Games next month.

Wee Wern will still compete in the team event at the Asiad.

“It feels good to win today but unfortunately the timing was not great because the National Championships was the selection for the Asian Games,” said Wee Wern.

“I’ve lost my Asian Games slot but I am at least getting my PSA career back on track. I feel that parts of my game are coming back.

“The National Championship was my first competition back and I needed a few more matches under my belt at the time (prior to the final with Sivasangari).

“I have had about one week to work my game since then and there was some improvement today. I just need need to keep playing more matches to get where I was before (injury).”

The men’s final will see Qatari Abdulla Mohd Al Tamimi squaring off with Tsz Fung Yip of Hong Kong.

Abdulla defeated defending champion Leo Au (Hong Kong) 811, 11-2, 7-11, 11-9, 11-9 while Fung Yip downed Lucas Serme of France 11-7, 8-11, 11-7, 11-7 in the semi-finals.
