ZAWAWI TO FOCUS ON INFRASTRUCTURE
PKR candidate promises to improve roads, drainage
PKR candidate for the Sungai Kandis seat Mohd Zawawi Ahmad Mughni will focus on infrastructure development if he wins the Sungai Kandis by-election.
The 48-year-old, who is fondly called Ustaz Zawawi, said among the infrastructural issues faced by constituents are poor drainage, waste disposal and road safety.
“There are lanes (Jalan Kebun area) without streetlights, which pose a hazard at night to drivers and motorcyclists, especially during peak hours.
“I’m aware of issues faced by residents in other areas in Sungai Kandis.
“These include poor drainage and illegal waste disposal, which I will get the local authorities to act on,” he said after attending the Program Insan Briged Wanita Prihatin here yesterday.
He said this was part of his plan to continue efforts by the late assemblyman Mat Shuhaimi Shafiei to serve the people.
“Shuhaimi was known as a man who often went to the ground to meet the rakyat and listen to their problems.
“He wanted to ensure the wellbeing of people in rural areas were taken care of and that they had access to basic facilities, such as surau, mosques, roads and streetlights.”
Zawawi said he aimed to look into issues surrounding the poor and underprivileged.
“We have planned strategies, including meeting village heads and ways to approach the people to learn about their problems.
“InsyaAllah (God willing), we will seek solutions to their issues.”
The campaign for the by-election kicked off yesterday after candidates completed the nomination process on Saturday.
Zawawi, Barisan Nasional’s Datuk Lokman Noor Adam, who is an Umno Supreme Council member, and independent K. Murthy have 13 days to woo voters.
Zawawi and Lokman kick-started their campaign by performing Subuh prayers at 5.30am at Masjid An-Naim and Masjid Al Rahimiah, respectively.
They had breakfast with constituents and held meet-and-greet sessions and walkabouts.
Zawawi launched the party’s by-election operations room in the evening. Lokman visited party grassroots leaders in Sungai Kandis and conducted prayers. He attended a doa selamat for pilgrims leaving for the haj.
Sungai Kandis residents are eager to see what the candidates can offer them and the constituency.
The seat fell vacant following Mat Shuhaimi’s death on July 2 due to lymphoma. In the 14th General Election, he garnered 23,998 votes, defeating Umno’s Datuk Kamaruzzaman Johari (11,518), Pas’ Mohd Yusof Abdullah (7,573) and Parti Rakyat Malaysia’s Hanafiah Husin (76).
