Your phone can take great pictures

Don’t underestimate the phone you’re holding when taking photos, writes Izwan Ismail

MOBILE phones may have become the primary devices for people to take photos but do you know that the higher-end ones can take photos that are just as good as the ones taken with a dSLR or a mirrorless camera?

With pixel counts ranging from 12 mega-pixels to 24 mega-pixels, huge detailed pictures are possible from smartphones nowadays.

With features such as image stabilisation, artificial intelligence, a big aperture, manual mode and digital zoom, smartphones these days produce stable and clean photos, even under low-light conditions.

Today, I will look at some factors and the use of certain techniques that affect the outcome of photos using mobile phones.

1. CONTRAST: Look for contrasts when taking your shots. The Dayabumi building in Kuala Lumpur looks very outstanding against the clear blue sky.

3. FOCUS ON ONE SUBJECT: In this photo, the head of the salmon is the main subject in the frame. I focused on the fish by tapping its head on the screen. When taking a photo using a phone, just tap on the subject that you want to focus on in the frame. The rest of the image will be slightly out of focus.

4. FOR STEADY SHOTS: When taking photos with your phone, always hold it with both hands to prevent blurry images. Don’t tap on the shutter hard as it will shake the phone. In this photo of a mosque in Istanbul, I used both hands to hold the camera and held the phone close to my body for a steady shot.

5. REFLECTION: In Malaysia, we are blessed with a lot of rain. Look for stagnant water on the street, walkways, mud, etc and try to capture some reflection shots. Place your phone really close to the water and see if you can capture both the subjects and the reflections. I flipped the photo for a creative look.
