1,500 Johor students join SSM seminar
JOHOR BARU: The 1st Step Student Entrepreneurship Programme (1st Step) organised by the Companies Commission of Malaysia (SSM), attracted the participation of 1,500 students from Sekolah Menengah Teknik (SMT) and vocational colleges in the state yesterday.
The seminar, which was held at SMT Johor Baru’s Dewan Sri Gemilang here, attracted students from various fields of studies to get involved in business.
SSM chief executive officer Datuk Zahrah Abd Wahab Fenner said the commission was a government agency that was committed to ensuring that entrepreneurial activities for the youth were strengthened to encourage greater participation in entrepreneurship.
“The 1st Step programme aims to approach students and inculcate an interest in the world of business.
“It hopes to convey the message that business is a field that students can venture into.
"The seminar’s module is based on the law and regulations so that students can benefit from the knowledge and practice it," she said at the closing ceremony of the seminar yesterday.
Present were Deputy Domestic Trade and Consumerism Minister Chong Chieng Jen, the ministry’s secretary-general, Datuk Seri Jamil Salleh, and the Education Ministry's Technical and Vocational Education Division director, Zainuren Mohd Nor.
Zahrah said at the event, 60 vocational college students registered their businesses with SSM under the 1 Pelajar 1 Perniagaan (1P1P) scheme for free.
SSM distributed its corporate zakat and donations as part of its corporate social responsibility totalling RM29,000 to nine SMT and vocational colleges in the state.
SMT Johor Baru's Surau Al-Falah received RM5,000, while 100 asnaf (eligible recipients) and 20 students received RM200 each from SSM.
Zahrah said under the 1P1P scheme, 26,404 students and undergraduates had registered their businesses, with 24,000 sole ownerships, while the rest were partnerships.
The programme was also held at SMT Kuantan, and the Gombak, Matang and Kuala Kangsar vocational colleges.
