COUPLE CHARGED WITH CAUSING SON’S DEATH

Judge sets bail at RM15,000 with one surety each; Aug 27 for case mention

ACOUPLE claimed trial at the Sessions Court here yesterday to depriving their 10-yearold son of proper medical care, which led to his death on July 9.

Car salesman Mohammad Zawani Mohammad Jasni, 30, and his wife, Azreen Junysar, 29, from Kampung Rantau Panjang, Klang, were charged with denying their son, Muhammad Luthhakim Abdullah, adequate and proper medical care which led to the boy suffering physical injuries and his death.

The duo was jointly charged under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, read together with Section 34 of the Penal Code, which carries imprisonme­nt of up to 20 years, or a fine not exceeding RM50,000, or both.

Deputy public prosecutor Farahah Mohd Nazari offered bail of RM30,000 for each accused, with one surety.

Zawani pleaded for lower bail, saying that he had another son under his care and only earned RM2,000 from his job; while his wife, who previously worked as a babysitter, told the court she only earned RM1,200 a month.

Judge Siti Aminah Ghazali set bail at RM15,000 with one surety each, and fixed Aug 27 for mention.

She allowed the accused to appoint lawyers to represent them in court.

Earlier this month, Muhammad Luthhakim was pronounced dead at Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital here after he fainted at home.

A post-mortem revealed that he died due to bleeding in the oesophagus.
