Wee Wern can still dream
Wee Wern has come back into the picture after facing uncertainty in her squash career,
Sidelined by a serious knee injury in the past 20 months, she was keeping a low profile.
But the former World No 5 has made a successful comeback by winning her maiden Malaysian Open title in style yesterday.
And now Wee Wern believes she is well on the way up.
The Penangite, who turns 28 on Wednesday, insisted she has not given up hope on becoming World No 1 and winning the World Championships.
“It has always been my goal not just to get back to World No 5 but eventually go on and become World No 1 and World champion,” said Wee Wern.
“That has been my target for a long time and obviously with the injuries, there were always doubts whether I could even get back on court and play at a competitive level, not to mention get back to the top-10.
“There is still a lot of work to be done and unfortunately Aaron Soyza (coach) will be stuck with me for the next couple of years trying to achieve our targets.
“Like I said before, I have a very good team with me and I am very thankful for that.”
Wee Wern added that she is looking forward to the Indonesia Asian Games next month where Malaysia will be defending the women’s team gold.
“I think we have a strong team for the Asian Games, especially with Nicol David leading the charge.
Wee Wern, who won a team gold and singles silver at the 2014 Asian Games, will only compete in the team event this time.
She missed out on the second slot for the individual event after being edged by S. Sivasangari in the final of the National Championships, which had served as a qualifier for the Asian Games, earlier this month.
