It’s too late for Wee Wern unless...

Squash Racquets Association of Malaysia (SRAM) have confirmed that it is unlikely Low Wee Wern will see action in the individual event at the Indonesia Asian Games despite her good form.

SRAM director of coaching Maj (rtd) S. Maniam said the registration period for the quadrennial games has already closed.

Only injury to Nicol David or S. Sivasangari, the two players listed for the individual events, would enable Wee Wern to compete in the singles competition.

“The entry is closed, and Nicol and Sivasangari have been registered for the individual event, Wee Wern will only compete in the team event,” said Maniam.

“There will be no changes unless there is injury or some other reason which will cause Sivasangari or Nicol to pull out.

“Wee Wern is listed as a reserve for the individual event.

“Based on Wee Wern’s recent performance, I believe we have a good chance of winning a medal (in team event).

“I hope our players, including Nicol, will be able to play at a good level to allow us to win a medal.”

After spending 20 months on the sidelines due to a serious knee injury, Wee Wern made a sensational comeback by winning her maiden Malaysian Open title on Sunday.

Earlier this month, the Penangite reached the final of the National Championships, which also served as Asian Games trials, where she lost in five sets to Sivasangari.

Wee Wern, however, got her revenge in the semi-finals of the Malaysian Open where she defeated Sivasangari in straight sets.

Aifa Azman is the other player in the women’s squad. She secured her slot by virtue of finishing third in the National Championships.

Malaysia won two gold, two silver and one bronze in squash at the 2014 Incheon Asian Games.
